Hebomoia glaucippe is occurring in Asia Butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Whites (Pieridae). Carl von Linné described the species in 1758 under the name Papilio glaucippe and named it after Glaucippe , one of the fifty daughters of Danaos from Greek mythology .
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 80 to 100 millimeters. They are therefore one of the very large whites and are therefore sometimes referred to as the "great aurora butterfly". The species is characterized by a slight sexual dimorphism . Both sexes have white wings. In the males, the apex area on the upper side of the forewing is bright orange-red over a large area, bordered in black and provided with small black wedge spots. A discal stain is missing. In females, the apex area is yellow-orange in color and bordered with a stronger black. The hem area on the upper side of the hind wing has a black color and shows some black spots in front of the hem. The fore and hind wing undersides of specimens of the monsoon season are ocher-colored and sometimes light brown marbled and patterned with a thin dark brown vertical stripe. This makes you look like a withered leaf. Moths of the dry season show much lighter wing undersides.
Pre-imaginal stages
The egg is light brown in color, has a grain-like shape and has a few straight longitudinal ribs on the surface, which end at the micropyle as tips.
Adult caterpillars are bright green in color. The entire, very rough surface of the body is dotted with black. The side stripe is broken up into red or yellow dots and laid out in white. Behind the head there is a large glossy black and an orange-brown spot on each side. Together with the pointed head shape, the caterpillar with the black eye spot looks like a nasal whip snake ( Ahaetulla nasuta ) and thus scares off potential predators. This appearance is a typical example of mimicry .
The doll is designed as a falling doll and has a light green color. The wing sheaths protrude and show the moth's drawing shortly before it hatches.

Similar species
The aurora butterfly ( Anthocharis cardamines ) and some butterflies of the genus Colotis , for example Colotis danae, show similar wing drawings, but are significantly smaller than Hebomoia glaucippe with wing spans between 30 and 60 millimeters .
distribution and habitat
The species is widespread in the entire Southeast Asian region. Hebomoia glaucippe primarily inhabits light forests, brook banks and meadows.
Way of life
The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. They like to suck on flowers, for example on lantana ( Lantana ). The caterpillars feed on the leaves of cabbage ( Brassica ), caper bushes ( Capparis ), Crateva and Cleomaceae . During the preparation of a protein profile was in the wings of Hebomoia glaucippe the presence of Glacontryphan-M , a peptide toxin , which is also in the cone snails counting (Conidae) genus Conus was found found. The poison acts as a defense against various predators, including ants, praying mantises, spiders, lizards, frogs and birds.
