geography
There are two communities on the island, Tonoshō and Shōdoshima (formerly Ikeda and Uchinomi ), which make up Shōzu County . The island was the first area in Japan where olives were successfully grown, and is therefore sometimes called "Olive Island".
The Dobuchi Strait ( 土 渕 海峡 , Dobuchi-kaikyō ), the world's narrowest strait with a width of 9.93 m at its narrowest point, lies between Shōdoshima and the neighboring island of Maeshima to the west .
Shōdoshima belongs to Kagawa Prefecture and is located north of the prefecture capital Takamatsu . It has an area of 153.25 km² and a coastline of 126 km. In terms of size, it ranks 19th among the islands of Japan and is the second largest in the inland sea.
history
In ancient times , the characters were read as Azukishima and the island was part of the Kibi Province (later Bizen Province ), then the Sanuki Province , and finally the Kagawa Prefecture. According to the genesis of Japanese mythology in Kojiki , Azukishima was the 10th island that was born by the creator deities Izanagi and Izanami . Her mythological name there is Oho-no-de-hime ( 大 野手 比 売 ).
traffic

tourism
The island is a popular tourist destination for Japanese. In addition to sights such as Dobuchi Street and Kankakei Gorge ( 寒 霞 渓 , Kankakei ), it is famous as the setting for the film " 24 Eyes " ( 二十 四 の 瞳 ) by Tsuboi Sakae ( 壺 井 栄 ), which later has been rewritten into a story. Shōdoshima is also known for its olives, soy sauce, beaches, and wild monkeys. The island is also the first on which olive growing in Japan was successful. There is also a miniature version of the Shikoku pilgrimage route with its 88 temples.
The island of Milos in Greece is Shōdoshima's partner island .
