The island is a popular tourist destination for Japanese. In addition to sights such as Dobuchi Street and Kankakei Gorge ( 寒 霞 渓 , Kankakei ), it is famous as the setting for the film " 24 Eyes " ( 二十 四 の 瞳 ) by Tsuboi Sakae ( 壺 井 栄 ), which later has been rewritten into a story. Shōdoshima is also known for its olives, soy sauce, beaches, and wild monkeys. The island is also the first on which olive growing in Japan was successful. There is also a miniature version of the Shikoku pilgrimage route with its 88 temples.
