Haha-jima ( Japanese. 母 島 , literally: "Mother Island"), also known as Coffin Island or Hillsborough Island , is the second largest island of the Ogasawara-guntō ( Bonin Islands ) in Tokyo Prefecture . The archipelago has belonged to Japan since 1876 . Haha-jima has an area of 19.88 km² and 450 inhabitants. The highest point is Mount Chibusa with a height of about 462 m. The nearby Sakaigatake mountain is only slightly lower at 443 m.

There is only one road on the island that leads from the now abandoned village of Kita ( 北 村 , - mura ) in the north to the southern end. There is no public transport. About 450 people live on Haha-jima (as of 2009). Before the war it was significantly more: 1,546 (1904) and 1,905 (1940).

Most of the people live in the village of Oki ( 沖村 , -mura ) at the southern end of the island, where the port is also located. The largest island in the group - Chichi-jima or "Father Island" - is about 50 km north of there. The journey by ferry takes about two hours. Both villages were combined in 1940 in the village of Ogasawara . During the Second World War in 1944, all residents were evacuated to Japan and the island was converted into a fortress .

tourism

The island is visited by cruise ships from time to time . The relics of the war are also visited. The attractions also include the graves of three Europeans who settled on the islands before the Japanese: Mr. and Mrs. Moitley and the German Rolfs Rulf (Rolf?) Called Ross (hence the Ross Museum in Oki).

economy

In addition to a small rum and liqueur factory, there is also tourism on the island . However, since the archipelago does not have an airport and the journey by ship takes more than 24 hours, it is quite modest.

fauna

The Bonin Spectacled Bird ( Apalopteron familiare ) is endemic to Haha-jima .
