Moederkerk (Stellenbosch)
The Dutch Reformed Moederkerk is the oldest church in the South African city of Stellenbosch . Construction of the church began in 1719. The consecration took place around 1723.
After the city's first church was destroyed in a fire in 1710, the citizens of Stellenbosch decided to build a new building in the eastern city center in 1717. Originally a simple church with a thatched roof was built on a cross-shaped floor plan. In 1807 a sacristy was added to the building, and in 1814 it received a classical gable.
Between 1862 and 1865 the church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style according to plans by the German architect Carl Otto Hager . He also created the characteristic pointed tower. With its gleaming white facade, the building is typical of the colonial architecture of the Western Cape .
