Kyūroku-jima or Kyūroku-shima ( Japanese 久 六 島 ) is a rocky reef , sometimes also referred to as an island, in the Sea of Japan about 30 km from the main Japanese island of Honshū .

The rocky reef consists of three separate groups: kami no shima ( 上 の 島 , “upper island”) in the west, shimo no shima ( 下 の 島 , “lower island”) in the east and jibu no shima ( ジ ブ の 島 , “outrigger -Island ") in the south. The largest rock belongs to the " kami no shima " group, has an east-west extension of 40 m, a north-south extension of 15 m and is 4.9 m high.
Administratively, the reef belongs to the municipality of Fukaura in Aomori Prefecture .
history
Abalones ( awabi ), turban snails ( sazae ) and squid ( ika ) were fished in the reef as early as the end of the 16th century , but they were discovered in 1786. Because of the rich occurrence of Pleurogrammus azonus ( hokke ), abalone and seaweed , it was controversial between the prefectures of Aomori and Akita until it was added to Aomori in 1953 and Akita was given joint usage rights.
On October 20, 1959, a 20 m high unmanned lighthouse ( 久 六 島 灯台 , Kyūroku-shima tōdai ) was put into operation, the lighting has a range of 7.5 km.
