Mishima ( Japanese 見 島 ) is an island in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of the Japanese prefecture of Yamaguchi .

geography

The island has a north-south extension of about 4.6 km and an east-west extension of 2.5 km, while the coastline is 24.3 km. The highest elevation of the 7.73 km² island is the 181 m high Ikurage ( イ ク ラ ゲ 山 ).

The island was formed at the end of the Miocene - Pliocene and consists of andesite and basalt rock, including the only prefecture-wide occurrences of picrite . The basalt layer is about 150 m thick.

Due to its location by the sea, the island's summers are cooler than in the prefecture at 24.9 ° C. However, this is offset by the warm Tsushima Current , which ensures milder winters with average temperatures of 7.4 ° C. The annual mean temperature is 17 ° C. In addition, there is mostly cloud cover.

The island forms the district of Mishima in the municipality of Hagi on the Japanese main island of Honshū , although only two narrow coastal areas are inhabited. The main settlement Honmura ( 本村 , "main village") extends over a small plain in the south and Utsu ( 宇 津 ) along the coast of a bay in the northeast. 1041 (as of April 2009) people live there. Next to it is on a plateau in the West location of the Marine Self-Defense Forces .

Culture

To the east of Honmura are Kofun hill tombs from the late 7th to early 10th centuries. The approximately 200 graves of the group of tombs called Mishima Jīkombo Kofungun are spread over an area of 300 m × 100 m. In contrast to those on the main Japanese islands, the Kofun on Mishima are mainly built of rock. On July 25, 1981, these were named National Important Cultural Property.

Mishima cattle are found on Mishima , one of the last two native Japanese cattle breeds still preserved without crossbreeding with European breeds. This was declared a National Natural Monument on September 20, 1928.
