Saku-shima ( Japanese 佐 久 島 ) is a Japanese island in Mikawa Bay .
geography
The 1.81 km² island is located east of the Chita Peninsula and northeast of the island of Himaka-jima . Geologically, like Himaka-jima, the island consists of Neogene layers of sandstone and shale . The island, with its 271 inhabitants (2010) now forms the hamlet Isshikichō-Sakushima the community Nishio of Aichi Prefecture , and was until 1954 the independent village Sakushima was then Isshiki ( - chō ) incorporated and this was in turn himself in 2011 after Nishio.
In the bay Ōura ( 大 浦 ) are the islands Ōshima ( 大 島 , dt. "Big island"; 34 ° 43 ′ 0 ″ N , 137 ° 2 ′ 41 ″ E ) and Tsutsujima ( 筒 島 ; 34 ° 42 ′ 51 ″ N , 137 ° 2 ′ 50 ″ E ). Both are uninhabited but connected to Saku-shima by bridges, with the first island housing a fishing center and the second a Benzaiten temple.
The island is known for its 40 burial mounds ( kofun ) from the 6th and 7th centuries and its buildings traditionally painted black with coal tar to protect against sea water. There are also a variety of art installations on the island.
