Nushima ( Japanese 沼 島 ) is a Japanese island in the Kii Channel of the Seto Inland Sea .

geography

The 2.67 km² large island of Nushima is located at the northern end of the Kii Canal, three kilometers south of Awaji . The island is hilly with a highest elevation of 117.2 m. Nushima, which was incorporated into Nandan (today Minami-Awaji ) in 1955 , has 482 (as of July 2016) residents, who are concentrated on a harbor settlement along a bay in the west. Based on archaeological finds of pottery shards, the island has been inhabited since the late Jōmon period (2000–1000 BC). There is a ferry connection to the opposite port of Habu (also Nadagyo-kō) on Awaji and to Sumoto port on East Awaji.

Geologically, the island and the rocks surrounding it, especially in the east, are made of mica schist .

The island is part of the Setonaikai National Park .

mythology

Kamitategamiiwa

According to the mythological genesis of the Japanese islands described in Kojiki , the primordial gods Izanagi and Izanami rammed their heavenly jewel lance into the sea and when they pulled out the tip, salt dripped from the tip, which in turn formed the first land. This island, called Onogoro , is identified with Nushima, among others.

Associated with the myth is the 30 m high lance-like rock Kamitategamiiwa ( 上 立 神 岩 , German "upright rock of the gods"; 34 ° 9 ′ 44 ″  N , 134 ° 49 ′ 41 ″  E ) south of Nushima, which is the symbol of the island.

In the western part of the island there is the Onokoro Shrine ( お の こ ろ 神社 , Onokoro-jinja ) on a mountain in which both primordial gods and the entire mountain are venerated as their Shintai Onokoro-san.
