Florian Coulmas

Florian Coulmas (born June 5, 1949 in Hamburg ) is a German Japanologist and author.

Life

Florian Coulmas studied sociology , German studies and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and at the Sorbonne from 1968 to 1975 (1969–1970). In 1977 Coulmas received his doctorate from Bielefeld University . In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the University of Düsseldorf . Here Coulmas taught as a private lecturer at the seminar for general linguistics . In 1987 he took over a professorship for sociolinguistics at Chūō University . He is professor for the language and culture of modern Japan at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg . From October 2004 to September 2014 he was director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo . Coulmas lived in Japan for many years and published on the subjects of script linguistics , the sociology of language and Japanese studies . He writes regularly for the Japan Times , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

In 2016, Coulmas received the Meyer Struckmann Prize for research in the humanities and social sciences .
