Dell Hymes

Dell Hathaway Hymes (born June 7, 1927 in Portland , Oregon , † November 13, 2009 in Charlottesville , Virginia ) was an American linguist and anthropologist .

Life

Hymes initially studied with David H. French until 1950. Before the beginning of the Korean War , Hymes was employed in the army as a decoder in Korea , which gave rise to his interest in linguistics. In 1955, Hymes received his doctorate from Indiana University with a dissertation on the language of the Kathlamet. In his work he referred to the research results of Franz Boas . After working at Harvard University , Hymes moved to Berkeley University in 1960 and from there after five years to the University of Pennsylvania . Together with John Gumperz he developed the ethnography method of speaking . From 1987 he taught as a professor at the University of Virginia , where he was retired. In 1974, Hymes was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1991 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy .
