Izu-Ōshima is located in the Pacific Ocean about 100 km south of Tokyo , south of Sagami Bay , 22 km east of the Izu Peninsula and 36 km southwest of the Bōsō Peninsula . The closest, however, is the neighboring Izu Island of Toshima , which is 19 km south of Izu-Oshima. Izu-Oshima is 13 km long and 11 km wide. With an area of 90.73 km², it is the largest island in the group. The summit of the stratovolcano Mihara is 764 m above sea level. The volcano is still active with stronger eruptions every 100 to 150 years. The last major eruption occurred in 1986, when lava fountains occurred at 1,600 m and Subplinian eruptions at 16 km.
