Udone-shima ( Japanese 鵜 渡 根 島 ) is an uninhabited island of volcanic origin in the Pacific Ocean . It belongs geographically to the archipelago of the Izu Islands and politically to the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo .

Udone-shima is about 150 km south of Tokyo , halfway between Toshima and Niijima , from which it is about 5 km away. The island is about 1.5 km long, up to 550 m wide and has an area of ​​0.4 km². It rises steeply from the ocean and reaches a height of 210 m above sea level. There are numerous small cliffs in front of the island.

Despite its small size, the island was inhabited in the Meiji period . One operational sericulture . The island still has a shrine .
