The Oki Islands ( Japanese 隠 岐 諸島 , Oki-shotō or 隠 岐 の 島 , Oki-no-shima ) are an archipelago in the Sea of Japan , 40–80 km west of the coast of the island of Honshū . They are now part of Shimane Prefecture as Oki County . Before that they were the independent province of Oki .

The Oki Airport is located in the city of Okinoshima on Dōgo .

geography

The archipelago consists of two subgroups, which are separated by the Dōgo Channel ( 島 後 水道 , Dōgo-suidō ): Dōgo ( „," island rear ") in the east with the main island of the same name , and Dōzen ( 島 前 ," island front ") in the West, with the three main inhabited islands: Nakanoshima ("middle island"), Nishinoshima ("western island") and Chiburi-jima .

There are also around 180 islands in addition to both groups.

*Several of the islands have identical names such as Matsushima 'pine island', Kuroshima 'black island', Hirajima 'flat island' etc. In addition, the character can be read both as -shima and -jima , although the specific pronunciation varies depending on the source or Speaker distinguishes.

The islands have a total area of 346.10 km² and a population of 19,631 (as of October 1, 2019).

Geologically, the alkaline rock of the islands is similar to that of the Korean Peninsula or the volcanic zone of the North Korean Paektusan . Dōgo consists of alkaline basalt from the Miocene , which was raised as a nest in the Pleistocene . The rougher surface of the Dōzen Islands in turn consists of trachy basalt from the Tertiary and is an external sign of a Somma volcano with the islands as a caldera and the Takuhi-yama ( 焼 火山 , literally: "burning volcano") on Nishinoshima as the central volcanic cone.

The climate is strongly influenced by the Tsushima Current , so that the mean annual temperature is a warm 14 ° C. The annual precipitation is again 1750 mm.

The islands and surrounding marine areas are partly part of the Daisen-Oki National Park .

history

Japanese map from 1724. Oki Islands (bottom right), Liancourt Rocks (center), Ulleungdo (left).

In the late 7th century, Dōzen administratively formed the Ama district ( 海 評 , Ama no kōri ) and Dōgo the Suki district ( 次 評 , Suki no kōri ). After the reorganization of the Japanese state in the Taihō Code , these 702 were replaced by the districts of Ama ( 海 部 郡 , Ama-gun ) and Chibu ( 知 夫 郡 , -gun ) for dōzen, as well as Suki ( 周 吉 郡 , -gun ) and Ochi ( 穏 地 郡 , -gun ) for Dōgo.

Because of their remote location, the islands served as an exile. a. for the emperors Go-Toba 1221 and Go-Daigo 1331.

In the Middle Ages, the islands were u. a. ruled by the Sasaki , Kyogoku and Amago and were then part of the Matsue fiefdom during the Edo period .

In 1969 all districts of the islands were united to form the district of Oki.

designation

In ancient times, the area was called Oki-no-kuni ( Oki Province ) and was written with the Chinese characters ( Kanji ) 隠 岐 國 . Other spellings besides 隠 岐 were 意 伎 and 隠 伎 . After the provincial system ended, the islands became known as Okinoshima ( 隠 岐 島 ).

Over time, these were also written as als 岐 の 島 , with the particle no in Hiragana , especially since the spelling 隠 岐 島 can also be misread as Oki-jima . Okinoshima means "The Islands of Oki", which in turn is partly translated as Oki Island ( Oki Island ) or Okinoshima Island ( Okinoshima Island ), as Japanese usually does not differentiate between singular and plural. There are also a number of other islands in Japan that are called Okinoshima, such as the sacred island of Okinoshima in Fukuoka, but which use different characters - mostly meaning "remote island".

The inhabitants of the four inhabited Oki Islands call the archipelago just Oki , as well as the respective islands after their main towns, such as Chibu for Chiburijima , Ama for Nakanoshima and Saigō for Dōgo, the city of Saigō with the other villages on the island in 2004 was merged to the new city of Okinoshima , which does not include the entire archipelago.

To avoid confusion with other islands in Japan, the four inhabited Oki Islands are sometimes referred to as Oki-Dogo, Oki-Nishinoshima, Oki-Ama, and Oki-Chibu in English.

These individual island names are also used in the international media along with the local translation for "Oki Islands", e.g. B. Oki Islands in English, Îles Oki in French, etc.
