Apega
Apega , also known as the First Iron Maiden , is an instrument of torture that is said to go back to the Spartan tyrant Nabis (207–192 BC, King of Sparta). According to the report of Polybius , he had a maiden with splendid clothes made of iron, who resembled his own wife Apega as closely as possible. The iron Apega is said to have had sharp nails under her robes on her arms, hands and breasts. If a citizen refused to pay tribute, the iron Apega would have taken him to the chest until he gave in or was put to death.
