Apertium is a machine translation - software that used to be by financing the Spanish government and the autonomous region of Catalonia at the University of Alicante has been developed. Now Apertium is financed through voluntary donations from members. It is free software and is published under the terms of the GNU GPL .
Apertium was created as one of the machine translation programs of the OpenTrad project and initially translated between closely related languages. It was later expanded so that it can also work with languages that are more diverse. To develop a new machine translation system, only linguistic data ( dictionaries and rules) have to be created in a precisely defined XML format. Apertium uses transducers for all lexical transformations. The hidden Markov model is used for part-of-speech tagging , which in German means the assignment of all possible forms . Other machine translations currently available use mostly proprietary software . Because they mostly use different technologies for the different language pairs, it is very difficult to integrate them into a single content management system .
Language data developed for the software (in collaboration with the Universidade de Vigo , the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra ) support the languages (as of 2015):
