Apricot kernel oil ( apricot oil ) is a vegetable oil obtained from apricot kernels , i.e. the inner almond of the stone .

The oil content of the apricot kernel is around 35 percent by mass . Apricot kernel oil contains a high proportion of essential fatty acid residues and vitamin E in its triglycerides . Apricot kernel oil is cold-pressed and usually refined afterwards, unless it is to be used for flavoring. Due to the high proportion of unsaturated fats, it is also a very valuable oil in itself for nutrition. However, since it quickly becomes rancid - also due to its unsaturated fats - only small amounts of the mildly fruity oil come onto the market.

In addition to traces of several vitamins, the triglycerides in apricot kernel oil mainly contain fatty acid residues, which are derived from oleic and linoleic acids:

There are also traces of vitamin A , vitamin B and niacin . The iodine number is between 96 and 109. Apricot kernel oil contains only very small amounts of poisonous hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which arises from the constituents of stone fruit kernels amygdalin , since hydrogen cyanide and amygdalin are not fat-soluble.

Most of the production is refined after cold pressing . As a result, the characteristic aroma is largely lost, while the shelf life increases. Refined apricot kernel oil is mainly used in the cosmetics industry for the manufacture of nourishing ointments , creams and shampoos ( INCI : PRUNUS ARMENIACA KERNEL OIL ).
