Aqueduct bridge over the Erft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aqueduct bridge over the Erft between Euskirchen-Rheder and Euskirchen-Stotzheim is, in addition to the aqueduct bridge over the Swist , another major structure in the Eifel aqueduct that supplied the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium , ancient Cologne , with water.

The bridge was approx. 500 m long and up to 5 m high, but was completely demolished in post-ancient times for the extraction of building material, so that apart from a weak elevation west of the Erft nothing can be seen. During an archaeological excavation in 1990, however, the substructure of the western bridge ramp could still be examined. An archaeological peculiarity was that there was a hole in the stamped concrete of the ramp that reached into the natural ground under the foundation and was probably created by a surveying peg, which was probably used to indicate the position and height during the setting out.
