Products

Aras Innovator controls business processes related to product development in manufacturing companies such as mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and comparable high-tech industries with complex products.

The software is based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and is available as an enterprise open source solution under the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL). The core of Aras Innovator, the so-called framework , is offered as a free download, but is not available as open source. However, all business applications based on it are freely available as open source. On the server, Microsoft SQL Server , IIS and .NET provided as a web browser on the client version depending only of Internet Explorer , with newer and the Firefox supported.

In addition to the classic PLM functionality, the application supports project management according to PMI ( Project Management Institute ) and APQP , product development including CMII methods for change management, and quality assurance with FMEA risk management.

Aras Corp optionally offers companies a paid subscription contract for Aras Innovator. Customers receive services such as maintenance, support, (regular) updates and advice on implementation. Without a subscription contract, the software cannot be supplied with updates or converted to a higher version. Integration solutions for existing company software such as CAD and ERP are also available.

Use in research and business

According to the company, Aras Innovator is used by Motorola, Rolls-Royce, General Electric, Xerox, Fox Electronics, Zyxel, the US Army, Freudenberg, Ubidyne and AIRBUS, among others. Aras Innovator is used for teaching purposes at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern at the Chair for Virtual Product Development (VPE) and at the Technical University Dresden at the Chair for Construction Technology / CAD.

With this open source solution, companies save license costs compared to comparable PLM software (from providers such as Siemens PLM, Oracle / Agile PLM or SAP), but with Aras Innovator the (annual) subscription costs in the five-digit range required for productive operation are due. A PLM implementation usually costs a five- to six-figure amount, depending on the size of the company and the number of users.
