work ennobles

The play Arbeit ennobles von Detlev von Liliencron appeared in 1887.

The protagonist of the "Genre Picture in 2 Acts" set in New York in 1872 is Count Gyldenkralle, who, similar to Liliencron, had to say goodbye to the army after he had owed 40,000 thalers. Four weeks after his arrival in the New World, he went to the wealthy emigrant Smith in his "house on Fifth Avenue" to ask him, dressed "in the elegant, unmistakable civilian of a Prussian officer", to give him a job To provide. At first, he finds the offer to work as his daughter's groom unreasonable, although Smith reproaches him: “Work doesn't dishonor - work ennobles!” But when he sees Maria with her “wonderful eyes”, his mind changes. Of course, the two fall in love, and Smith not only agrees to their marriage, but also repays the son-in-law's debts.
