from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Working Group on Art History Image Archives and Photo Libraries (AKBF) was founded in 2004 and is an amalgamation of image archives from German research and cultural institutions. Together they are pursuing the goal of developing a strategy for the future of analog picture archives and photo libraries in the digital age. In addition to setting up a comprehensive infrastructure for the digital presentation of photographic image material from art, culture and science, the partners are particularly keen to develop and establish standards and best practice recommendations for archiving , cataloging and digitizing photographic holdings. A special focus is on the development of historical photo material as part of the cultural heritage. The AKBF currently has more than 14 million photographs on the history of art and culture, a large part of which are already accessible via shared online portals on the Internet.
