The Lechauen nature reserve near Thierhaupten is located directly east of the Lech, west of Thierhaupten . It was placed under nature protection on March 1, 1989 and, with 105.36 hectares, is the largest nature reserve in the Augsburg district .
The Lechauen near Thierhaupten contain an old water of the Lech, the "Ellgauer reservoir", which was expanded in the 1960s in the course of the river development, and the surrounding alluvial forest . The nature reserve also includes a section of the Aubach "Münsterer Alte" in the east, which is undeveloped and well preserved.
The water-forest complexes of the Lechauen near Thierhaupten are part of the Lechtal biotope bridge . In particular, the silting zones of this area are valuable breeding and foraging biotopes, especially for water birds and marsh birds .
