The working group for elementary school computers , consisting of educational scientists , student employees and elementary school teachers, was founded in 1986 under the direction of Hartmut Mitzlaff and Karl A. Wiederhold in the pedagogy department of the university (today TU Dortmund ) - with the aim of using scientific research and practical work to open up the possibilities and To explore the limits of the use of computers in primary education in German schools. The working group, which at the beginning encountered considerable resistance and abrupt rejection in German pedagogy and education policy (including von Hentig 2002), is considered a “pioneer group” in this area in the German-speaking world (Kochan, 1996, p. 136).

In the course of just a few years, the working group was able to establish a global information network with more than 200 comparable research groups. From this international communication, the theoretical considerations and the discourse between school practice and science, the first practical study on computer use in German primary schools emerged in 1988/89 (cf. Mitzlaff and Wiederhold 1990). At times the group maintained its own information sheet entitled “Education and Computers” (published by Ursula Gies, Hartmut Mitzlaff and Karl A. Wiederhold, see illustration). Against the background of the contemporary rejection of digital media in elementary school lessons in the federal states and the negative decisions of the federal-state commission for educational planning and research funding (BLK) from 1985 and 1987, the working group formally ceased to exist in 1990. Between 1992 and 2011 Mitzlaff has in different groups and especially with students the research and development work at the Goethe University in Frankfurt , the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Münster , the University of Kassel , the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland continued and expanded (cf. Mitzlaff 2007 and Schrackmann et al. 2008).
