development

history

The office has existed since 1975. It was founded under the name "Contact Point for Scientific Further Education" as a model experiment by the former Federal-State Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion (BLK) and initially belonged to the former Department of Education at the university. In the first few years, the main activity of the facility consisted of seminar courses . It was about lectures by Hamburg university teachers, which were carried out together with cooperation partners, mostly recognized further education institutions, in northern Germany. At the end of the model project phase, an initial further education course was added.

The establishment of the institution as a permanent unit within the university took place in stages. At first, after the end of the pilot project, it was decided to budget the temporary positions. In further steps, the central settlement of the offices, the renaming of the Laboratory for Scientific Further Education (AWW) and the formation of a central operating unit, which was finally approved at the beginning of 1986 by the competent authority for science, research and equality .

Field of activity

In the summer semester of 1982, the AWW took over the general lecture system (AV), the public lectures at the University of Hamburg, in its offer. The AV had previously been revived in the course of a discussion on the subject of “public science” at the university. It stands in the tradition of the university expansion movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the previous institution of the same name, which was incorporated into the higher education context when the university was founded in 1919. Today the AV is one of the basic pillars of general academic further education at the university.

In the 1993/94 winter semester, the AWW offered contact studies for older adults (KSE) for the first time. At the beginning, 345 students registered. Today there are around 2,100 people in winter and around 1,600 people in summer who put together their free studies from the around 400 events that are offered each semester.

In 2002 the AWW started a new media project, which involved the development and establishment of e-learning modules in management and qualification in the field of teaching and course design on the Internet. In recent years, the AWW has increasingly been used in joint projects with companies to develop and test e-learning approaches.
