Argostoli Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum Argostoli ( Greek Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αργοστολίου Archeologiko Mousio Argostoliou , formerly Museum of Kefalonia ) is an archaeological museum in Argostoli on the western Greek island of Kefalonia.
The museum was founded as the Museum of Kefalonia . After the earthquake of 1953 , Patroklos Karantinos designed a new building in 1955 , which was inaugurated in 1960. The museum documents the history of the island from the Stone Age through the Mycenaean period and antiquity to the Byzantine Empire .
The main exhibits date from the Mycenaean period, including a bowl and gold necklace made from Lakkithra from the 12th century BC. And a bronze clasp and a vase from Diakata also from the 12th century. Finds from Lake Melissani and a Roman mosaic from Vazza near Mantzavinata date from ancient times .
Since 2014 the museum has been closed until further notice due to severe earthquake damage.
