Archisem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archisem is a sem that all sememes or lexemes of a word field have in common. It thus connects the different units of meaning of a lexeme or a word field with one another.

  • Example 1: The sememe FLIEGEN is the archisem of the sememe FLIEGEN, FLIEGE, FLIEGER.
  • Example 2: The lexeme "piston", with its various partial meanings ( sememen ) such as [movable machine part] and [strong, thick nose], has as archiseme [cylindrical shaped object] or [protruding clunky movable part] or the like.

If the archiseme is contained in the vocabulary of a language, the corresponding lexeme is called an archilexeme . In example 1, "flying" is also the archilexeme.

The concept of the existence of an archiseme contradicts Wittgenstein's thesis of the mere family resemblance of meaning families .

  1. It is assumed here that the sem [flying] underlies the concept of the fly as well as the airplane.
