Hillert Ibbeken (born February 16, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German geologist and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hameln, he studied geology , palaeontology and mineralogy at the Free University of Berlin from 1955 to 1960 . After graduating in 1960 and completing his doctorate two years later, he continued field studies he had started earlier in Italy , especially in Calabria , as a DFG assistant with a teaching position at the university, where he also completed his habilitation in 1968 and was appointed professor in 1970 .

1970/72 he was chairman (dean) of the geosciences department. In 1980/81 he was visiting professor at California State University Hayward , 1981/82 he was Vice President of the Free University of Berlin for natural sciences and research, whereby he was particularly committed to the establishment of computer science at the FU.

The focus of his geological work was the balancing of erosion and sedimentation processes, not only in Calabria, but also in Death Valley in California and in the Atacama Desert in Chile, most recently as part of the DFG Collaborative Research Center 267 “Deformation Processes in the Andes”. Ibbeken wrote and shot six 16 mm geoscientific color films for international distribution at the ZEAM Film Institute at the Free University of Berlin.

After his retirement in 1997 he devoted himself to architectural photography , created a series of illustrated books and edited them in collaboration with art historians. In 2015 a volume with 66 stories was published.
