The basis of the archive holdings is the "Werthmann Collection" created by the former Wehrmacht Field Vicar General, Georg Werthmann (1898–1980) with documents on Catholic field pastoral care in the Wehrmacht . The main focus of the tradition today is the military chaplaincy in the Bundeswehr since 1956. The collection of church records from German garrison parishes goes back to 1730.
