history

Hans Schreiber and Richard Ortmann have been pursuing the preservation of musical cultural assets in the Ruhr area since 2006 . Initially, they had to do this in Dortmund in Güntherstr. 65, in the Music and Culture Center (MUK), rooms are rented. The musician Ortmann and the sociologist and economist Schreiber dealt with the archiving of musical materials as well as the archiving of tones, sounds and noises. Under the name MUSIC information and documentation center RUHR, they joined the international association of documentation and information centers on musical cultures networked under the German Music Council.

With the name, a focus was placed on the music and sound landscape of the Ruhr area. The move in 2013 to the former welfare building of the Minister Stein colliery , the "Evinger Schloss" in the listed old colony Eving in Dortmund-Eving at Nollendorfplatz 2, made it necessary to found a registered association. The connection to the region was emphasized under the name Archive for Popular Music in the Ruhr Area.

Collection holdings

For the archive for popular music in the Ruhr area, a pragmatic decision was made to define the collection holdings, which leaves the further direction of the collection largely open: “Everything except classical” is understood as popular music. The archive is therefore open to all styles and genres as well as to three-dimensional, extraordinary exhibits from music history. The archive is based on the collections of Hans Schreiber and Richard Ortmann, which encompass many decades of music history. One goal of the archive was and is to bundle the numerous private and public collections on music history in the region and to bring them together in one place - this applies physically and virtually in the sense of networking and information exchange.

The holdings also include transfers from larger archives, such as B. the 'Kurt Oster Archive', which was recorded last year.

The archive for popular music in the Ruhr area also addresses all those who want to part with their collections. The holdings of the archive for popular music in the Ruhr area therefore not only include sound carriers, but also films, photos, books, journals, magazines, fanzines, programs, tickets, posters, written records, sheet music, instruments, correspondence and numerous memorabilia. Music history and the history of technology are closely related, so you can also find exhibits on the subject of "technology and music", divided into production technology (studio and live equipment as well as musical instruments) and playback technology.

The history of popular music is represented in the archive through all genres, starting with work songs, gospel, blues, jazz, swing, dance music, hits, soul, rock'n'roll, country, folk, workers' songs, political songs, skiffle, beat, Folk-Rock, Rock, Rhythm'n'Blues, British Blues, Krautrock, Psychedelic, Fusion, Rock-Jazz, Free-Jazz, Electronic, Punk, Neue Deutsche Welle, Metal, Grunge, Rap, HipHop, Techno, New Music, Experimental music, avant-garde.
