The archive in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss is a municipal archive sponsored by the Rhein-Kreis Neuss .

History and jurisdiction

The archive is the joint archive of the Rhine district of Neuss, the cities of Dormagen and Jüchen and the municipality of Rommerskirchen . It sees itself as a contact point for everyone who is interested in the history of the district and the three municipalities. Organizationally and institutionally, the archive developed from the Neuss district archive, which began operations on May 1, 1982 when the first archive manager, Karl Emsbach, began as the archive of the district administration of the same name in Grevenbroich. Since it was housed in very cramped rooms in the first few years, it was moved to the district culture center in Dormagen-Zons in 1990. The archive has been operating under its current name since January 1, 2007, when the Neuss district archive and the Dormagen city archive were merged. Since January 1, 2013, the archive has also been responsible for the transmission of the Rommerskirchen community, and since September 21, 2018 also for that of the Jüchen community (since January 1, 2019 city). Overall, there is a four-fold responsibility that the archive in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss currently has: It delivers the original documents of both the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and the cities of Dormagen and Jüchen as well as the municipality of Rommerskirchen including their respective legal predecessors.

The archive is still headquartered in the former Electoral Cologne state castle Friedestrom in the district culture center in Dormagen-Zons (Schloßstraße 1), where the district museum Zons and the international dialect archive Ludwig Soumagne are also housed. In Jüchen, the archive also operates a branch in the premises of the former municipal archive (Steinstrasse 9). Karl Emsbach directed the archive from 1982 to 2011. Stephen Schröder has been archive management since January 1st, 2012.

Archives holdings

The archive in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss contains the official documents of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, the cities Dormagen and Jüchen as well as the municipality Rommerskirchen including the respective legal predecessors from the end of the 18th century to the present. The certificate tradition dates back to the year 1471. One of the most used official holdings include the civil and civil registers of supervised municipalities, which are present in large part in filmed and digitized form.

The official documents are supplemented in the non-official archives and in the collections of the archive. This includes documents from private individuals (bequests), associations or companies, but also the newspaper delivery, the various photo collections as well as the maps, plans and graphics. The archive also maintains its own thematic collections (e.g. on the First World War). The chronicle of Dormagen, written by Johann Peter Delhoven for the years 1783 to 1823, is one of the best-known national collections in the archive. An overview of the archive holdings, including a description of the holdings and - if available - online search tools is available on the NRW archive portal .

Archive library

Attached to the main location of the archive in Dormagen-Zons is a library comprising a good 20,000 works , the thematic focus of which is publications on Rhenish regional history and general cultural history. The library has a collection of several hundred bibliophile books, the oldest of which are over 500 years old. The collection goes back to different provenances ; a large proportion of this is made up of works from the former Dyck palace library.

Archive pedagogy

At both locations, the archive offers various archive educational measures that are used by school classes of all ages and types of school. In addition to general or thematic archive tours, this includes school projects and archive workshops on selected topics, in which the students themselves do research and discovery based on contemporary original documents. In the historical Zollfeste Zons , the archive also realizes interactive historical city games. The archive maintains educational partnerships with the Bettina-von-Arnim-Gymnasium Dormagen and the Norbert-Gymnasium Knechtsteden.

Events

The archive's regular offerings include exhibitions, historical themed evenings, summer tours through the castle complex and the archives, as well as a historical series of lectures, which under the title “History in the Vaulted Cellar” brings together six to seven events a year on various topics of local, regional and rural history .
