Archive portal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An archive portal offers bundled information about archives and / or the possibility of researching the holdings of several archives at the same time. It is usually a web portal that bundles information on a specific topic and makes it accessible. But there are also portals in the narrower definition of IT that offer the integration of separate applications, processes and services.

Archive portals in Germany

Since September 24, 2014, the “ Archivportal-D ” is a central German archive portal. This was implemented as a sub-project of the German Digital Library (DDB) and offers archive-specific access on a national level. Information on archive facilities from all over Germany can be found in Archivportal-D. In addition, archival indexing services as well as digitized and digital archive material are made available for use. The content offered is gradually being expanded through the acquisition of new data suppliers. Scientists as well as all users of archives can do comprehensive research in the archive portal-D in all finding aids of the participating archiving institutions and display search results and possibly digitized archives from archives of various carriers. A nationwide archival research is thus made possible.

The BAM portal (joint portal for libraries, archives and museums), which was discontinued on June 30, 2015 in favor of the DDB, offered access to archived material without thematic restrictions .

The website of the Marburg Archive School provides an overview of the German state archives with address data, links to inventory overviews, online finding aids, archive laws, archival publications, etc. The MICHAEL project tries to record digital collections in museums and all other institutions that preserve cultural assets on a national and European level (without proof of the individual objects).

Regional and thematic archive portals

In many federal states there are now portals with information about the archives (addresses, websites, inventory overviews, etc.) in the respective federal state.

Research access to online finding aids (regional)

Comprehensive research access to the online finding aids of several archives is provided by e. B. the State Archives Baden-Württemberg, the Hessian State Archives, the State Archives Administration Rhineland-Palatinate, the Lower Saxony State Archives, the archives in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the main State Archives Saxony and Thuringia. The Federal Archives also enable research in its online finding aids (currently still using two different systems). The archives of the other federal states partly offer detailed overviews of holdings with descriptions of holdings, which can often be researched.

Research access to online finding aids (thematic)

  • The central database of personal papers of the Federal Archives enables comprehensive searches for personal papers , especially in archives, but also in libraries. The Kalliope network enables comprehensive searches for autographs and personal papers, especially in libraries, but also in archives. Both portals should be used in addition.
  • The portal to the SED and FDGB archives enables comprehensive research into SED and FDGB archives in the holdings of the Federal Archives and the state archives of the new federal states.
