Archivista (Italian for " archivist ") is a web application for realizing the paperless office . It can be used to capture documents from different sources, save them digitally in a secure and searchable manner and then export them again. It is manufactured by the Swiss Archivista GmbH, which also sells pre-installed complete solutions with hardware, the so-called ArchivistaBoxes, and technical support.

The software is distributed as free software under the terms of version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL). The development began in the early 1990s, initially as software for indexing scans of paper documents. The software is used by the Swiss Office for Property Appraisals for the Canton of Schaffhausen and EADS Astrium , among others .

features

The entire system is offered, among other things, in the form of ISO image files , from which optical media can be created that are bootable as a so-called live system that can be used directly . It can be used as a local installation (on the user's machine) or via a computer network. Using CUPS, it provides a print server that can intercept print jobs and archive them in electronic document formats. The contents of IMAP e-mail mailboxes can be archived. Devices such as document scanners can be integrated during operation. It implements long-term archiving according to legally prescribed standards. The document archive database can be searched with full text search and all documents can be output in PDF . Archive DVDs with included viewing software can also be created. It contains a text recognition solution through which the stored raster graphic images of scanned paper documents can be made searchable. Even bar codes and contents filled paper forms can be read by machine.

technology

The software is based on Debian and other free software components and uses open file formats throughout. SANE is used to access scanner devices. The text recognition functionality is based on Tesseract as standard ; the command line version of FineReader is included in the complete packages sold commercially . The core of the modular application is written in Perl and PHP .
