Archive pedagogy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archives pedagogy can be viewed as “area pedagogy of general pedagogy ” and comprises all pedagogical measures that enable or facilitate people to access and use archives . Public relations work is one of the main tasks of an archive alongside the collection, management and processing of archive material. Libraries have established themselves as educational institutions for decades, while the “archive” educational institution is largely unknown and is therefore hardly used by the general public to a comparable extent. With the demands of an information society on well-founded and authentic information , both the interest in archives as a knowledge and information store and the need for skills and abilities of the potential users to be able to use these stores accordingly increases. The aim of archive pedagogy is to give teachers and students an insight into the history of their own living environment and to promote independent research-based learning. Connections between the theoretical learning material conveyed in the school and the events of the selected time span in the own region are made "understandable".

In order to lay the foundations for an archival didactic concept, a diagnosis of the archival self-image and the definition of a contemporary model is necessary. In the literature, most authors agree that the archives have evolved over the last 20 years from a “memory of the authorities” to a “memory of society” with a mandate for cultural, information and educational policy.

The advent of new technologies such as the digitization of archives, electronic storage and management or multimedia access are changing both the archives and the way users deal with the archives, which have become more accessible and can be used without endangering the originals and therefore also for the use can be made accessible by new groups of people. Last but not least, this also results in the expansion of archival educational needs and the increase in corresponding didactic possibilities and offers.
