Archway is an underground station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Islington . It is on the border of the Travelcard tariff zones 2 and 3, at the intersection of several main roads. In 2013, 8.17 million passengers used this station served by the Northern Line .

The station building consists of red glazed terracotta bricks. The architect responsible was Leslie Green , under whose direction a total of 28 stations were built in the same style at the beginning of the 20th century. Immediately next to it is the Archway Tower, a 59-meter-high office tower that inspired the New Model Army for their song Archway Towers . The skyscraper is also said to have inspired Nick Hornby for his novel A Long Way Down . There, the high-rise is also called Topper's House because of the frequent suicides . About half a kilometer to the west is the well-known Highgate Cemetery .

The station was opened under the name Highgate on June 22, 1907 by the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway , a private predecessor company of the Northern Line. Here was one of the two northern endpoints. During the 1930s, the station was modernized by replacing the original elevators with escalators . A second entrance area designed by Charles Holden was also created. On June 11, 1939, the name was changed to Archway (Highgate) . A few weeks later, on July 3, 1939, the extension to East Finchley went into operation. Two more renaming followed; on January 19, 1941 in Highgate (Archway) and finally on December 1, 1947 in Archway . The original name Highgate was transferred to the next station in the north.
