Arco is a floor lamp that was designed in 1962 by the Italian industrial designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for the lighting manufacturer Flos . It is considered an icon of modern industrial design .

history

The Castiglioni brothers, who had been designing lights together since 1945, developed the light to solve the problem of having to damage the ceiling in order to install ceiling lights. According to their motto that good design requires close observation, they found the solution in the implementation of street lighting , which they adapted for room lighting. Street lights are firmly fixed to the floor and, in contrast to the room free-standing lights that were common up to now, are able to illuminate several meters around them

Technical drawing

As an equivalent for the ground anchoring, they chose a heavy block of marble to which a steel arch with a lamp sitting on it is attached. To avoid the problem that the space between a person sitting at a table and the lamp is no longer passable, the arch was designed to be expansive. The problem of moving was solved with a hole in the marble block so that two people can move the lamp with the help of a broomstick.

As an outstanding example of modern product design , it was accepted into the collection of the Museum of Modern Art . To this day, the lamp has been produced and marketed by Flos almost unchanged, the only changes being adjustments to the applicable standards for electrical appliances .
