Ardu l-Furātaini Watan ( Arabic أرض الفراتين وطن Ard al-Furatayni Watan , DMG Arḍu l-Furātaini Waṭan ) wasthe Iraqi national anthem from 1981 to 2004 .

Mesopotamia is (our) home is the free translation. The literal translation would be: "The earth of the two Euphrates is home". 1

The first four lines are:

وطن مدى على الأفق جناحا
وارتدى مجد الحضارات وشاحا
بوركت أرض الفراتين وطن
عبقري المجد عزما وسمحا

Waṭanun maddā ʿalā l-ufqi ǧināḥā,
Wa-rtaddā maǧda l-ḥadārāti wišāḥā,
Būrikat arḍu l-Furātaini waṭan,
ʿAbqarīya l-maǧd ʿazman wa-samāḥā.

A homeland that spread its wings over the horizon
and wore the glory of civilization as garb -
blessed to be Mesopotamia,
home of glorious determination and tolerance.

1In Arabic , a two-number form ( dual ) can also be formed from names if it is clear what the second name is. Here Furāt , ie "Euphrates", was put into the dual, because everyone knows that " Tigris " has to be the second name.
