List of historical national anthems

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains national anthems that are no longer used . It is about

  • National anthems of no longer existing states / organizations
  • National anthems of existing states / organizations that are no longer in use as national anthems

For current national anthems see the list of national anthems .

Notes on using this list:

  • International organizations are written in italics .
  • Regional anthems of sub-national units are indicated with arrows under the state to which they belong.
  • Hymns that have been used in place of the usual national anthem on certain occasions are treated as regional anthems
  • In the modern colonial areas of the 19th and 20th centuries, the hymns of the mother countries were usually used, but these are not listed. Colonial areas are only listed if they used their own hymns.
  • As far as information is available, all hymns for each state are listed from the date on which an anthem was first used. If their use has been suspended in the meantime, this is noted.
  • Most national anthems do not have a generally accepted translation, both for the title and for the text. The translations used here are partly literal, partly analogous transfers.
  • In the case of many early national anthems that were not yet legally stipulated, the question of whether they were already national anthems in the modern sense cannot be answered clearly. Such hymns are written in italics , details on their use can be found in the respective article.
