The March of the Volunteers ( Chinese  義勇軍 進行曲  /  义勇军 进行曲 , Pinyin yìyǒngjūn jìnxíngqǔ ) is the national anthem of the People's Republic of China . The lyrics are from Tian Han , the melody from Nie Er . The song was chosen at the first session of the first national committee of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People (CPPCC) on September 27, 1949 as the provisional national anthem of the People's Republic; On that day the flag and coat of arms were set and Beijing was declared the capital.

Because Tian Han was criticized and ostracized as a “deviator” during the Cultural Revolution, the hymn was still played from around 1966 until his posthumous rehabilitation in 1979, but no longer sung. De facto (although not officially) the song of praise The East is Red fulfilled the functions of a national anthem at this time .

At the National People's Congress of China in 1978, the March of the Volunteers was again confirmed as the national anthem, but with a modified text that had previously been selected by a committee chaired by Hua Guofeng . This text, which begins with the words “Forward! Heroic People of All Nationalities ”began, but was not able to assert itself in public in the following period, so that the national people's congress on December 4, 1982, with the original text version by Tian Han, made the hymn the official national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
