It was composed in 1898 by Julian Felipe as an instrumental march and was originally called Marcha Filipina Magdalo , later changed to Marcha Nacional Filipina , the composition was based on the national anthem of the First Spanish Republic (1873-1874), the Himno de Riego and was the hymn in this form the first Philippine republic . The original (Spanish) text was written by José Palma in 1899 and was called Filipina . The text was first published on September 3, 1899 in La Independencia . In 1920 an English translation was made after the US government lifted the ban on Filipino national symbols. In 1938, the Philippine Congress declared the most popular English translation the official national anthem. In 1948 a version in Filipino , O Sintang Lupa , was declared the national anthem. It was not until 1956 that the revised version Lupang Hinirang was created by order of President Ramon Magsaysay . The current version goes back to a last revision in 1966 and was confirmed as the only official version in 1998.
