Nokoreach (“Royal Empire”, Khmer បទនគររាជ ) is the national anthem of Cambodia . The lyrics are by Chuon Nat, the melody, edited by F. Perruchot and J. Jekyll, is from a Cambodian folk song. The title of the hymn is also the name of an ancient Khmer kingdom.
It was first adopted as the national anthem in 1941. When Cambodia became a republic under Lon Nol in 1970 through the overthrow of King Sihanouk , Nokoreach - which celebrates the king in its first verse - was abolished before it became the national anthem for a short time again in 1975 with the takeover of the Khmer Rouge .
With the end of the civil war and the restoration of kingship as a constitutional monarchy in 1993, Nokoreach became the country's national anthem again.
