The original text comes from the important Armenian poet Mikael Nalbandian (1829–1866), the composition by Barsegh Kanatschjan (1885–1967). The song was first used as a national anthem by the Democratic Republic of Armenia from 1918 to 1920. Mer Hajrenik was declared the new national anthem of the Armenian SSR on July 1, 1991, before the country's independence from the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR . It replaced the hymn of the Armenian SSR , but the original text was changed and a stanza was removed.
