Pátria ( Portuguese for fatherland ) is the national anthem of the Democratic Republic of East Timor ( Timor-Leste ).
background
The text of the hymn was composed by Francisco Borja da Costa , the melody comes from Afonso Redentor Araújo . Pátria became the national anthem on November 28, 1975 when East Timor's independence from Portugal was first proclaimed . But just nine days later, Indonesia occupied the neighboring country. Costa was killed in the invasion and Araújo was captured and executed by the occupiers in 1979.
After 24 years of guerrilla warfare and three years of UN administration , East Timor finally gained its independence on May 20, 2002. The country again adopted Pátria as its anthem. Law 02/2007 on national symbols stipulates that the score should follow the revised instrumentation by Paulo Pereira dos Santos and Afonso's brother Abílio Araújo . Text and notes are listed in the law.
There is only one version of the national anthem in Portuguese , which is spoken or understood by only a fifth of East Timorese and hardly exists as a mother tongue. A version in Tetum , the second official language spoken by the majority of the inhabitants of East Timor, is missing.
