Afonso Redentor Araújo

Afonso Maria do Santíssimo Redentor Araújo , also Santíssimo Redentor , (born August 2, 1942 , Portuguese Timor ; † February / March 1979 , Timor Timur ) was the composer of Pátria , the national anthem of East Timor . The hymn was composed as early as 1975. It was not declared a national anthem until East Timor gained independence on May 20, 2002.

Afonso was captured and later executed by the Indonesians who occupied East Timor between February and March 1979 .

Afonso was the sixth of eight siblings. His brother is Abílio Araújo , former FRETILIN representative overseas, composer of the FRETILIN anthem "Foho Ramelau" and founder and president of the Timorese Nationalist Party (PNT). The youngest sister Aliança Araújo sat for the PNT in the national parliament of East Timor .

In 2006 Araújo was posthumously awarded the Ordem de Dom Boaventura . His remains were not found until 2012.
