Nie Er ( Chinese 聶耳 / 聂耳 , Pinyin Niè Ěr , born as Nie Shouxin 聶守信 / 聂守信 , Niè Shǒuxīn , Zì Ziyi 子 義 / 子 义 , Zǐyì ; * February 14, 1912 in Kunming ; † July 17, 1935 in Fujisawa ) was a Chinese composer.
His ancestors came from Yuxi . As a school boy, he played several instruments in his spare time, including Dizi , Erhu , Sanxian, and Yueqin . He later learned to play the violin and the piano. In 1932 he joined the Lianhua Film Company and in 1933 became a member of the Chinese Communist Party . In April 1934 he became head of the music section of the Pathé Records branch in Hong Kong . In April 1935 he traveled to Japan to meet his older brother in Tokyo .
In the last two years before his death, he composed a total of 37 pieces of music, often in collaboration with the poet Tian Han , including the Chinese national anthem .
He died while swimming on a beach in Japan, probably from drowning.
