Flag of Bremen

The Bremen anthem is called Der Bremer Schlüssel and was a historical national anthem of the state of Bremen . The text was written in 1870 by the liberal politician and businessman Hermann Frese , the setting was done by the composer and journalist Georg Kunoth . It is unclear whether official recognition ever existed; in any case, the hymn has largely been forgotten today and is not used on official occasions of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. For example, the Fischer choirs recorded the folk song Der Bremer Ratskellermeister for their CD “Deutschland Deine Hymnen” . A few years ago, the Mountain Music Corps 8 played the Bremen anthem again for the first time as part of a CD with national anthems from the German states.

The formulation "Give the emperor what the emperor" in the first line of the third stanza is taken from the Gospel of Mark ( Mk 12.17  LUT ); Against the background of the political events at the time the anthem was written ( Franco-German War , foundation of the German Empire on January 18, 1871) it can be assumed that Kunoth's contemporaries also received it as a homage to the German Emperor .

Text of the national anthem Der Bremer Schlüssel

Do you see the lions on the shield,
Who carries a mighty key?
I will see this coat of arms picture
The pride increases, the heart moves.
This' coat of arms is the proud symbol
The old faithful Hanseatic city,
|: Those across the sea to all realms
Her red and white has worn. : |
Bright shone in the Hansabund
The Brema key all the time.
Even today he 'shines' around us
In old power and glory!
The good key wants to testify
That he likes to open the gate hospitably;
|: But he should never bend his beard
The arbitrariness! There be God before it! : |
Give the emperor what the emperor
You loyal city in Germany,
And pick you new honors
Acted by a simple citizen!
But we sing in your honor:
"Your shield shines brightly! And right
|: May prove yourself in Brema's lap
To the most distant sex! ”: |
