Daehan jeduk aegukga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daehan jeguk Aegukga ( 대한 제국 애국가 , 大 韓帝國 愛國 歌 ) was the national anthem of the Great Korean Empire (1897-1910) from 1902 until the incorporation of Korea into the Japanese Empire in 1910. It goes back to the German military musician and composer Franz Eckert .

history

Franz Eckert, who came to the capital Seoul in 1901 at the invitation of the Korean government to set up a military orchestra, developed a hymn on behalf of the court, which was based on the melody of a Korean folk song rewritten by the American missionary, teacher and journalist Homer Hulbert . It was probably premiered on January 1, 1902. In recognition of his services, Eckert received the Tai keuk 3rd Class Order of Merit from Emperor Gojong in December of the same year . Because of the long melody in 6/4 time and the difficult text, the hymn only spread slowly among the population. In addition, the integration of Korea into the Japanese Empire, which was completed in 1910, began with the Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty of 1905 .

God protect our emperor,
That his years multiply as
countless as the sand on the beach,
which piles up high in the dune,
that his fame spreads radiantly far
across all worlds,
and the happiness of the ruling house
flourishes a thousand times ten thousand years
anew with every day.
God protect our emperor!
