The Argeneau and Vampire Hunter series (English Argeneau and Rogue Hunter series) by Lynsay Sands is a romantic series of novels about immortals or vampires and how they find their companions. The focus of the books is on the members of the Argeneau family and the so-called vampire hunters (English Rogue Vampire Hunters).

The plot

The books describe the gathering of so-called life companions. The beings referred to in the books as vampires or immortals are not undead, but humans and originally come from Atlantis.

The inhabitants of Atlantis lived isolated from the rest of the world and were much more technologically advanced. So they developed nanos that they injected into the bloodstream of sick people, and these should protect patients from all diseases, such as B. Cancer, heal and self-destruct when the healing is complete. However, they did not consider that the human body constantly needs "repairs", be it due to environmental influences such as the sun or even the death of cells due to normal aging. Because of this, the healing could never be fully completed and the nanos remained in the body. The individuals who were infected with these nanos were given an indefinitely long life and eternal “youth”, since aging was prevented permanently, they were also immune to any diseases and healed very quickly, they became almost immortal. The infected could only die by burning, cutting off the head, stopping the heart for a long time or from a very long lack of blood. The nanos need blood for healing and for their own reproduction - more blood than the body can produce itself. If there is a shortage of blood in the body of the person concerned, the nanos attack their organs in order to get more blood, which is extremely painful and can lead to death in the long term without taking in blood. In Atlantis, this was not a major problem as these individuals were provided for by transfusions.

After the fall of Atlantis, however, the survivors found themselves faced with the problem that the rest of the world was not as developed as they were and that there was no blood supply. Many died in agony, some killed mortals, bled them to death, and drank from containers for blood. However, some soon noticed that they were evolving with the help of the nanos. Since they only dared to go out at night to avoid the harmful rays of the sun and thus reduce the amount of blood they needed to absorb, the nanos gave them the ability to see better in the dark and to allow them to better absorb blood, evolved Fangs that the immortals can extend and retract again. Their reflexes have also become faster, they can run faster, and are stronger than mortal humans. They also developed the ability to read and control other people's minds, which helped them to hide their existence. The ability to read, control, change and erase minds, and control another person, made it easier for them to drink from their mortal victims and not have to kill them as they would not remember anything.

But now the immortals had to learn to hide their thoughts from other immortals so that they cannot read them all the time, and thus also to protect themselves from being controlled. Soon the immortals found out that there were very rarely two immortals who could not read or control each other, these seemed to be chosen by the nanos as perfect partners and were referred to as life companions. Since they cannot read and control each other, they can live relaxed together without constantly having to hide and protect their thoughts. In addition, this prevents the older and thus more powerful immortal from controlling the other, and hurtful thoughts are spared. In addition, significant spouses are able to send thoughts to one another and share dreams with one another. They are also able to feel the lust and excitement of the other, which increases exponentially, which leads to extraordinary sexual climaxes, some of which are so overwhelming that the two of them lose consciousness. Life companions are therefore something very precious for immortals and vampires, and they are also very rare. Most immortals find only one significant other in their very long life, and few are fortunate enough to meet another significant other after losing the first.

The books in the series now follow the gathering of so-called life companions and the hurdles they have to overcome in order to be able to lead a life together. The happy immortals who find a significant other are family members of the Argeneau family and the so-called vampire hunters in the books.

The Argeneau family is a very large vampire family with numerous members. The vampire hunters work for the Council of Immortals. There is the Council of Immortals for Europe and there is the Council of Immortals for Canada and America. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two councils is that the European Council allows immortals to drink from mortals. The laws of the Council of Canada and America (where most of the books are set) forbid drinking from mortals unless it is an emergency or the mortal is a significant other, and any immortal is permitted to walk only one mortal in their lifetime (A mortal is changed by bringing nanos into his organism, this happens when the immortal gives him or her his or her blood to drink, after which the nanos spread in the body, multiply and transform the mortal into an immortal, what However, immortals are only allowed to father one child every hundred years, and they are obliged to do everything to ensure that the secret of their existence is kept. The vampire hunters find and "arrest" or, if necessary, kill rogue vampires who violate council laws. Arrested vampires are judged by the council and, if necessary, executed.

Brief summaries of the contents of the books

Volume 1: A Vampire Going astray (A Quick Bite)

Partners in life: Lissianna Argeneau & Dr. Gregory Hewitt

Lissianna Argeneau is a vampire and she passes out at the sight of blood. Therefore, her mother Marguerite Argeneau gives her a bed-tied psychiatrist for her birthday, who is supposed to free her from her blood phobia. It soon turns out, however, that Lissianna was the psychiatrist, Dr. Gregory Hewitt, can neither read nor control, which means that he is her significant other. The fact that he was kidnapped by his mother and tied to the bed makes their relationship a little more difficult, and then they are kidnapped by a priest and his assistants who want to stake and behead them to free them from their undead and cursed life to redeem ..

Volume 2: In love with a vampire (Love Bites)

Life partners: Etienne Argeneau & Rachel Garrett

Etienne Argeneau is a successful computer game programmer and is currently working on the second part of his very successful game Bloodlust. He is also a vampire, and unfortunately his “biggest” fan Pudge knows this secret and is now hunting him. Etienne ends up believing dead twice and actually very close to death in forensic medicine. Rachel Garrett works here as a pathologist. On Etienne's second visit to the pathology department, Pudge suddenly storms in and tries to behead him with an ax, Rachel tries to prevent this and is instead hit by the ax. To save the life of the woman who has just sacrificed hers for his, Etienne walks Rachel. She wakes up in his house where she learns that he is a vampire and now she is too (which she is not very happy about) and that he is the programmer of Bloodlust, her favorite game. Etienne soon notices that he can neither read nor control her and tries to win her heart. Just as he is able to win her over, Etienne threatens to lose Rachel when Pudge kidnaps her.

Volume 3: A Vampire to Eat (Single White Vampire)

Life companions: Lucern Argeneau & Kate C. Leever

Lucern Argeneau is a vampire and works as a writer under a pseudonym. His latest books reflect the true love stories of his mother Marguerite and his siblings Lissianna and Etienne and are classified by the publisher as historical fictional romance novels. These novels earned him a huge following, so his editor, Kate C. Leever, decides to persuade him to go on an autograph book tour. However, Lucern is shy and likes his secluded life. Since he does not react to her letters as desired, Kate gets on the plane without further ado, flies to him and sleeps in his house. At first Lucern is very annoyed by her intrusive behavior and the fact that she doesn't give up, but then he realizes that he can neither read nor control her. In his attempt to win over his partner, he agrees, on the advice of his mother, to take part in what he thinks is an interview by email, which then turns out to be a writers' conference. But since he has given his word, he also takes part, and the two get closer. Here they have to overcome some sometimes embarrassing hurdles, and then Lucern is attacked and ends with a stake in his heart.

Volume 4: Always Trouble with Vampires (Tall, Dark & Hungry)

Life companions: Bastien Argeneau & Terri Simpson

Bastien Argeneau took over the family company Argeneau Enterprises after the death of his father. He is an incredible workaholic and known for his quick and reliable problem solving. When his future sister-in-law Kate asks him to accommodate her cousin Terri Simpson in the penthouse for the two weeks that she is visiting before the wedding, the latter agrees, of course. But when his cousin Vincent shows up and Kate unexpectedly has to go to a conference with Lucern because her colleague Chris was almost killed by a toilet and she also billets him with Bastien in the penthouse, his life is suddenly completely upside down. Volume 5: Vampires don't have it easy either (A Bite To Remember)

Life partners: Vincent Argeneau & Jackie Morrissey

Vincent Argeneau is a theater manager and actor, and someone is sabotaging him. To get to the bottom of it all, on the recommendation of his cousin Bastien, he hires the private detective Jackie Morrissey and her partner Tiny McGraw. To Vincent's surprise, the two detectives aren't vampires like him, but rather initiated people with whom Bastien has worked several times. Vincent quickly notices that he can neither read nor control Jackie, she is his partner and privy, there is only the little catch that after a bad experience with a vampire in her youth she mistrusts all vampires and never comes close to any of them again want. For this she wants to let Jackie, as Vincent's partner, suffer in the sun impaled and then kill her.

Volume 6: A Vampire for Certain Hours (Bite Me If You Can)

Life companions: Lucian Argeneau & Leigh Gerard

Leigh Gerard, the owner of a restaurant and bar, is kidnapped by Donny Avries (one of her employees believed to be missing) and his "master" Morgan. The latter is a renegade vampire who has transformed many mortals, including Donny, to create a nest and wreak havoc. On the way to his house, Morgan gives her his blood to transform her. Lucian Argeneau is chairman of the council of vampires and a vampire hunter, together with the two vampire hunters Gerrett Mortimer and DJ Bricker he is on the hunt for Morgan. The three hunters storm the house, rescue Leigh and destroy the many vampires in the basement, but Morgan and Donny escape. Leigh is now in the middle of the change, and Lucian decides to take her to his sister-in-law Marguerite so that she can take care of her. But when he gets there, Marguerite jumps into the car and sets off for Europe to investigate a case with Tiny. Now Lucian has to take care of Leigh alone, which is very annoying to him at first, until he notices that he cannot read it. When the two finally get closer after initial difficulties, Morgan and Donny suddenly reappear and attack.

Volume 7: A Vampire and Gentleman (The Accidental Vampire)

Life companions: Victor Argeneau and Ellen (Elvi) Black; Dieudonne Jules Benoit and Mabel; Edward Kenric and Dawn; Alessandro Cipriano and Leonora Ricci

Victor Argeneau and DJ Benoit are vampire hunters. Her latest case, a woman named Elvi, has advertised in the newspaper to find a vampire partner. Now the two are supposed to find out whether this Elvi is actually an immortal like them and then bring this before the council, since such a report clearly violates the law of secrecy about the existence of vampires. For this, DJ Benoit responded to the ad on Victor's behalf. When the two of them arrive at the pub that Elvi and her friend Mabel owns, which is the meeting place, they quickly find out that the ad was not posted by Elvi at all, but by her friend Mabel and the police chief Teddy Brunswick. They don't want Elvi to be left alone after the death of their two friends. It also turns out that Elvi is not only actually a vampire, but also that the whole city knows about it and serves as a kind of mascot for them. Elvi also bites mortals, which is strictly forbidden by the council. And then it turns out that Victor Elvi cannot read. In the end, does he have to bring his significant other to the council that will execute her for so many offenses? Then he learns that Elvi became a vampire through an accident, so that she had no one who could explain the laws of the council to her. Victor hopes that this may save his Elvi and wants to explain everything carefully to the council. But after several attempts to murder Elvi, the situation in the small town threatens to escalate, and at the worst possible moment, Lucian Argeneau, the chairman of the council, suddenly appears to find out about the progress of the investigation.

DJ Benoit cannot read Elvis' friend Mabel and converts this after she agrees to be his partner. Harpernus Stoyan, Alessandro Cipriano and Edward Kenric also respond to Elvis' ad and find mortals in the small town they cannot read (Jenny Harper, Leonora Ricci and Dawn).

Volume 8: Who wants a vampire? (Vampires Are Forever)

Life companions: Thomas Argeneau & Inez Urso

For days there has been no sign of life from Marguerite Argeneau. What would not be a cause for concern with others, leads to the rest of the Argeneau family to the greatest unrest, Marguerite does nothing else better than constantly interfering in the life of her relatives. Thomas, Marguerite's nephew, agrees to travel to Europe to track down his aunt. Decker Argeneau Pimms was supposed to be enjoying his two-week vacation from working as a vampire hunter, instead he had to interrupt his vacation to look for a renegade vampire with Gerrett Mortimer and his partner. When it turns out that the renegade was not renegade at all and the hunters receive the information that the renegade Nicholas Argeneau, who has been on the run for 50 years, is nearby, it is clearly the end of the holiday and he gets together with Justin Bricker to find him. When they reach Nicholas, he tells them that he is chasing a group of apostates who have kidnapped two young women, and convinced by the screams that can be heard, the two join him to save the women. The kidnap victims are Danielle McGill and her 15-year-old sister Stephanie. They were kidnapped in front of a supermarket by six renegade immortals (Leonius and his five sons, also named Leonius). These six are so-called no-fangers , i.e. insane fang -toothless immortals, so they can only drink from mortals if they injure them and enjoy tormenting their victims. But Leonius kidnaps Danielle, gives her his blood and locks her in a cellar with a nice elderly couple. He tells her that she is now turning into a no-fanger and that he has left the couple as a source of food for her. Danielle manages to escape from the cellar with the couple, but the blood from the man's head wound becomes more and more irresistible. Will she hurt the couple? Is she really going to be a crazy no-fanger ? Will Decker then hate and kill her like Leonius predicted? And what will become of Stephanie?

Volume 12: You Don't Kiss Vampires (The Renegade Hunter)

Nicholas Argeneau was once a successful hunter who hunted down vampires who broke the laws of the immortals. But then he became an outlaw himself. Volume 14: Vampire à la carte (Hungry For You)

Life partners: Cale Valens & Alex Willan

When Marguerite Cale Valens suggests meeting Alex Willan, since she suspects that she might be his partner in life, the latter is initially skeptical and unsure whether he can hope at all after so long years. Alex 'sister Sam, who is still mortal, immediately senses her great chance to take the last of her sisters into the world of immortals and not have to give up. Since Alex is very busy with her two restaurants, her head chef has just quit and she doesn't know how to cope with everything and so has no time to meet Cale, Sam tells her without further ado that he is a chef from Europe and will help her out. Cale soon learns that Alex is having a lot of problems opening her second restaurant and offers her to take care of the organizational matters while she cooks again, which solves the problem, and the two grow closer. But then Alex is attacked and is only saved by the accidental appearance of an employee. When Cale drives Alex's car and she follows him in his car, he is suddenly pushed off the road by another car and crashes. Here he is seriously injured, and Alex now learns that he is a vampire because he has to ingest blood in order to be able to heal. Cale has no way of explaining everything to Alex, who flees in a panic and leaves him at the scene of the accident. Then she drives to Sam, because she is afraid that she is with vampires and in danger. When she arrives at the house, she is let in and Sam is in the middle of the change. Here she learns the truth about the Atlantean immortals and immediately regrets leaving Cale injured.
