Argiletum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Argiletum is the name of a street (or a residential area) of ancient Rome , which led from the Roman Forum into the Subura or as its main street through this populous district between Esquiline and Viminal and finally ended in Via Labicana . The Argiletum was known for its booksellers.

In the early imperial period, the first wing of the Argiletum was lined with the Augustus and Vespasian Forum , until Domitian began to develop this part into the Forum Transitorium , which, however, was only completed after the murder of Domitian under Emperor Nerva and inaugurated in 97 AD.

The course of the street retained its importance throughout the Middle Ages . Today it corresponds to the course of Via della Madonna dei Monti and Via Leonina.
