Argyresthia retinella is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the web and bud moths (Yponomeutidae).
description
This small butterfly reaches a wingspan of 9 to 10 millimeters.
Similar species
- Argyresthia thuiella and
- Argyresthia fundella (dark spots on the posterior margin of the forewing are evident in both species)
distribution
Widespread throughout Europe. The type locality is Glogów, Poland. Very common in the British Isles compared to other moth species.
Flight time
The species forms a generation that flies from June to July. The moths are attracted to the light, but they can also be observed during the day.
Way of life
The caterpillars feed on young shoots or catkins from willow (Salix spec.), Birch ( Betula spec. ), And poplar ( Populus spec. ). Examinations found the eggs almost exclusively on lichens, mainly on Parmelia olivacea , which often covers the trees. The eggs wedge between the lichen and the bark of the branches and twigs. On young trees without lichen, the eggs are stored in hollows of the eaten buds from the previous year. This is how the eggs overwinter. Laboratory tests have shown that they can withstand temperatures down to minus 35–36 ° C. The caterpillars hatch in spring and immediately bore into the buds.
Harmful effect
Mass outbreaks in northern Norway between 1991 and 1995 are reported with damage to hairy birch trees ( Betula pubescens and Betula pubescens subsp. Czerepanovii ).
