The Arhab lava field , located north of the Yemeni capital Sanaa at an altitude of approx. 2500 m, consists of a 1500 square kilometer basaltic plateau with some stratovolcanoes and around 60 cinder cones .
Most of the craters are aligned in a north-northwest line and rise above a 100 to 250 meter thick volcanic plateau. The volcanic rocks show a predominantly basaltic-Hawaiian to basaltic-rhyolitic chemical composition. The last eruptions took place between the years 400 and 600, creating a nine-kilometer lava flow.
