Arias-Stella phenomenon
Arias-Stella phenomenon , also Arias-Stella reaction , is a term used by pathologists for certain changes in the uterine lining . It is a coexistence of proliferation (growth) and secretion . The tissue is decidually changed locally , the nucleoli of the cells are enlarged and hyperchromatic, the cytoplasm increased with numerous vacuoles . These changes occur under the influence of hormones during pregnancy and are typically found in the abradate after an abortion . The Arias-Stella phenomenon is also caused by an ectopic pregnancy . The atypical cells can then be mistaken for the cells of a clear cell carcinoma .
The changes were first described in 1954 by the Peruvian pathologist Javier Arias-Stella .
